Difference Makers in Series vs Kings

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Roberto Luongo – Game 1 OT behind the back save
Roberto Luongo – Game 4 Breakaway Save that would make it 3-1
Roberto Luongo – Game 6 Ridonkalous save on Ryan Smyth while down and out

Steve Bernier – 4 Goals in the Series
Mikael Samuelsson 7 Goals and 11 pts in the series
Daniel Sedin – 10 points in series
Henrik Sedin – 8 points in series

the Swedes came to play and Steve “Stone Hands” Bernier seems to have found some finish Great Great Series and Congrats to All Kings Fans that easily could have gone to the Kings but we just had the difference makers that came up big when it counted. Kings going to be dangerous in the next few years. Not ONE minus player on the Canucks.

Top 5 Canuck thingies from 2009/2010

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

After reading a really good article from a Chicago Blackhawks Site www.paintitblackhawks.com, we wanted to give a top 5 Canucks Thingy that we learned about our team this year that may help them or may hurt them in the playoffs this spring.

1. Cardiac Canucks
2. Home Sweet Home
3. Road Kittens
4. One line team no more
5. Confidence and Health

1. Cardiac Canucks - There was NO team better than the Canucks this year at overcoming deficits going into the third period of play. The Canucks won 11 times when trailing going into the 3rd period. Since the 1997-98 season, only six teams have had more come-from-behind wins than the Canucks.

Thoughts: This can only be good for our home town heroes. They know they can come back from almost any deficit (see the Colorado 6-4 win game when they overcame a 3-0 1st period deficit)

2. Home Sweet Home – Canucks were 30-8-3 at home, second only to the Capitals (30-5-6). This will bode well for confidence and home ice advantage to at least the conference finals should we make it there.

Thoughts: You gotta win at home to prove you can go far in the playoffs. And the Canucks did it in spades this year. What a home stand.

3. Road Kittens – Canucks were 19-20-2 on the Road this year, good (or bad) for 17th in the league. We have to point out that 1 game under .500 on the road is not terrible by any means not at all, its just plain average. What is terrible is the way they played on the road this year. They barely scraped by one of the worst teams in the League (Maple Leafs) after falling behind 3-0 in the first period and lost to THE worst team (Oilers) in the league 3-2. This team was Jekyll and Hyde when it comes to home and away hockey. At home they are the most dominant force in the league. On the road they more resemble one of the bottom half.

Thoughts: The way they played on the road this year was too inconsistent and if they cant come fast on the road soon they will not do anything in the playoffs. Lets look at the last 5 stanley cup champions road records

Penguins 20-15-6
RedWings 25-12-4
Ducks 22-14-5
Hurricanes 21-14-6
Lightning 22-12-4-3

Not one of those teams had a subpar road record (the Penguins being probably the worst of the bunch) and its no fluke. YOU HAVE TO WIN ON THE ROAD.

4. One Line Team No More - The Canucks were the second highest scoring team in the league. They boast 6-25 goal scorers, the Art Ross Trophy Winner (Henrik Sedin 112 points) and have 4 of the top 10 +/- players in the League, second again only to the Capitals.

Thoughts: This team can score and in bunches. If that Can Hold up it might…. just might be able to over come #5.

5. Healthy Confidence – The Health of the Canucks backend is scary beyond belief. Willie Mitchell has not played in months and has most likely played the last game of his Canucks career (hopefully not) because of a concussion. Sami Salo says he is banged up but we all know that one bad luck moment and Sami is done like he has been every year he has played for us. At the start of the year we had a healthy line up of defensemen in order of team rank of importance  1 Mitchell 2 Salo 3 Edler 4 Errhoff 5 Bieksa 6 SOB 7 Schneider 8 Lukowitch 9 Rome 10 Baumer 11 Nycholatt 12 McIver 13 Oberg. Last game we played we had a line up of serviceable defensemen in order of team rank of importance 3 Edler 4 Erhoff 5 Bieksa ? Alberts (acquired at deadline) 10 Baumer and 13 Oberg with O’Brien back from banishment and Salo back from injury it doesn’t look as bad however having Rome and Alberts play on the same line really makes us nervous. The Confidence we speak of is of no other than our Captain and Gold Medal Winning Goalie Roberto Luongo. Can Luongo overcome a very shakey end to the season and come out of the shadow of a poor outing against the Chicago Blackhawks one year ago.

Thoughts: It will come down to our Defensemen and Roberto Luongo playing at their utmost best. Sure we can score in the regular season but the NHL is different in the playoffs and the lines will be matched better, the coaching is better and the players are better. Can we keep up the scoring? if not then our Defense and Goaltending must help save our bacon in that department. If not then we may not beat the Kings.

Canucks vs Kings – Round 1

Monday, April 12th, 2010

Was hoping for Nashville or Detroit. We know that sounds crazy but really we just want to face a team where you go in not underestimating them which we believe the Canucks will do. We are confident we will win the series but we wanted to face a tougher team (no offense to Kings but Nashville and Detroit are better and Detroit being MUCH better). We just want the canucks to get out of the first round with adversity and get the momentum needed to go past the second round (assuming our D is somewhat healthy)

Roberto Luongo Meet Ryan Smyth. Maybe this will help Lou. Getting someone in his grill right away (unlike St Louis last year) as to get anywhere near the finals its going through Chicago. (more on Ryan below)

That being said it comes down to Luongo 100% finding his form. Quick could play very very well but if Luongo plays like he did against St Louis last year and both Dallas and Anaheim in previous years this would be  a VERY short series which does NOT benefit Vancouver at all. The 8-3 loss was a fluke and may go against LA for hockey players memories are long in that regard.

Ryan Smyth always worries us, he could be a nightmare for Luongo in that crease and his office. Dustin Byfuglien killed Lou last year and took him off his game very easily. Luongo needs to have a sharper mental game and if there is any failure on his part this season we need a new goalie coach and sports psychologist :)

Drew Doughty also worries us from the backend. With our injuries the Kings have the advantage in that area Drew Doughty is one of the best.

We are not confident of a long run this year with the way we played down the stretch (Lou especially) but like the old saying goes. “Its a new Season” and Lou should rise to the occasion. Lets hope he finds the mental edge to go a long way.

Season End Review and Upcoming Season Preview Spectacular!

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

With the Season coming to a dramatic finish in a series that the Canucks had no business losing. A number of questions come to mind on many players. We will review each player from the season and their stats and speak a little about the upcoming draft and free agency before we can even tackle the upcoming season we must first look at the past.

Daniel Sedin – Daniel had a career year and increased his stats in every category from the season before. The increases were not even small either. Goals were increased by 2, points by 8 and plus/minus by 18. The only stat that fell on Daniel was his PIMS by 14 penalties. Daniel had a record playoffs as well with 10 points in 10 games with his best game coming in game 6 elimination against Chicago. Daniel is up for UFA on July 1st and like his brother has requested a 12 year deal in the neighborhood of $63 to $64 M dollars. A cap hit of $5.25M per season. Considering his ever increasing point production and leadership its a wonder why this deal is not signed yet. They will not play until they are 40. My guess is that its probably front loaded and the Canucks ownership doesnt want to shell out the big money up front and want them to play to the end. I think cap hit is way more important than salary in this new NHL and for a PPG player I dont see why he wouldnt be signed at this…. Not to mention his durability… Season Rating B+. Playoff Rating B.

Henrik Sedin - Henrik had a career year and increased his stats in every category from the season before. The increases were not even small either. Goals were increased by 7, points by 6 and plus/minus by 16. The only stat that fell on Daniel was his PIMS by 8 penalties. Henrik had a record playoffs as well with 10 points in 10 games with his best game coming in game 6 elimination against Chicago. Henrik is up for UFA on July 1st and like his brother has requested a 12 year deal in the neighborhood of $63 to $64 M dollars. A cap hit of $5.25M per season. Considering his ever increasing point production and leadership its a wonder why this deal is not signed yet. This sound familiar? Of Course it does because like Daniel, Henriks stats, career, life is a twin image… Season Rating B+. Playoff Rating B.

Ryan Kesler – Ryan Kesler had a career year and topped it off with a Selke nominated season (he lost to Datysuk). He had career goals, points and was handed a letter on his jersey to show the direction is as important in youth as it is in goaltending. Before being split up from Burrows  everyone thought the success from both season was each other. It turns out both are versatile in their game and can add scoring, aggressive play and still be huge pests. His playoff stats and performance fell way below average after the Blues series. Season Rating B. Playoff Rating C.

Pavol Demitra – Pavol Demitra had the exact year we expected him to have. Produce moderately when playing and be injured for the most important stretches. We knew what we were getting and it was pretty much a slam dunk that he would disappear when needed most. He has talent galore but misses the drive to be an upper echelon player at this stage of his career. His career has been riddled with injuries and although he produced more than the player he replaced (Naslund) his salary was the same and did not provide the needed punch for the whole season. Season Rating C. Alexandre Burrows - Alex Burrows had the career seasons of career seasons. he became one of the teams most valuable players and scored more goals on the Sedin line than anyone since Anson Carter…… He also signed a very modest 4 year deal at $2M a season showing that his importance to the team as a leader is as solid as his production and pesty nature. Alex scored goals. He scored BIG goals in timely situations. None bigger than what set it off against Carolina to break the slump and give him a finish to the season most only dream of. He was stellar against St Louis but tailed off against Chicago. Season Rating A+. Playoff Rating B.

Kevin Bieksa – Great bounce back year for Kevin in terms of injury recuperation and production. He provided the sparks needed and toughness desired for a defenseman of his nature. While his stats are not comparable to the year before due to the horrific injury he experienced he bounced back with a career year with 9 less games played than his first big year. Kevin is a bright spot on defense and is emerging at the right time with Mattias Ohlund going into free agency, his playoffs were less than stellar but he did provide the toughness needed he just has to get his mental edge down to combine the 2 to be as effective as the best in the NHL. Season Rating B+. Alexander Edler – The up and coming swede is just that. Up and Coming. In a season where we see Mattias Ohlund most likely leave the Canucks his replacement has jumped up into the light with an impressive sophomore campaign. While at times he struggled with the NHL speed the young swede proved himself a capable NHL defenseman that can log top minutes and be in your top 4. All this at 23 years of age. Season Rating B. Steve Bernier - Another step for young Steve Bernier in his NHL career at becoming a power foward. While he has tenacity in the corners and can fight and hit and be strong in front of the net His lack of finish is concerning but his age is not. If this kid can find his hands we could have a wonderful power forward that wont shy away from any contact in front of the Net. Season Rating C. Playoff Rating C.

Mats Sundin – Brought in to be the difference of a contender and pretender Mats Sundin never did make the grade to being a difference. He was a nice complement but not at the price tag he came at. What was immensely valuable for Sundins time in Vancouver was his impact on Ryan Kesler. This was very valuable and worth the money he was paid to score. Unfortunately in the playoffs that was another matter. in a time where Sundin has played his best hockey he became nothing more than a role player where he would not find his place in the playoffs. Aside from his many bad minor penalties during the season (41 games that it was) it was clear he should have made his decision sooner and played more games in the system. Season Rating D. Kyle Wellwood – Wellwood. Wellfed. WellPlayed for a player that was not considered NHL material and was passed by 29 other teams when put on waivers and placed on recall waivers. Wellwood scored some big goals in the first half of the season and barely any in the 2nd half. Most were on the power play where he spent most of his time and was not given a fair chance on the top 6 for most of the season. When he did get his time he produced. He should be re-signed at a one or two year deal. Season Rating C+. Playoff Rating C.

Mattias Ohlund – The old warrior seems to have played his final game with the team that drafted him. He had a great many years in a Canucks uniform and its sad to see him go….. and going he was he was getting slower taking stupid slow penalties and clearly was no longer a threat at all in any offensive role. He still is a very good defenseman but not for the money he will command in his first UFA market. Matty exemplified what it meant being a Canuck and unfortunately his time has come as we need a more mobile puck moving defenseman that can play the point. Season Rating C+. Playoff Rating B-.

Sami Salo - The record of when Sami Salo in the lineup is extraordinary. Our win % is above .700 with him in the line up and it is proven he may have been and is our most valuable offensive defenseman….. but he has not played a full season in his career and every year you can count on him getting injured for a lengthy period of time. That being said his cannon of a shot and what he brings to us is like the polar opposite everything negative he brings in just being injured. He has one year left on his contract and I dont see him being re-signed after it is done. Season Rating B-. Playoff Rating C+.

Willie Mitchell – Our most prominent shut down dman. Willie was stellar all year and had career stats in points and plus/minus. His gaffe in game 4 changed the series against Chicago and most likely really cost us a conference final appearance. He seemed to panic after that in almost every major situation as the Canucks never won another game after that nor were even remotely in the series. Willie has to be the biggest defenseman on the planet in order for this team to shut down the other teams big stars. That was what he was brought to do and has failed to do so when it matters. He also has one year left on his contract and needs to have an even better season to see bigger money. Season Rating B. Playoff Rating C-.

Mason Raymond – While the stats did not really show it this really was the coming out year for Mason Raymond. His playoff play was excellent and if given a more offensive role will find the hands to finish with his blazing speed. Mason is a player that every team needs to succeed and we hope that he is the one we have to push us for more youth movement. Season Rating C+. Playoff Rating B-.

Taylor Pyatt – Pyatts tragedy over the season was immense and his loss felt across the league. We wish him the best and hope he can recover his career in the NHL. His stats fell apart from the year before and his play was a shadow of what he could have been. Going into his contact year after this last year will most certainly not see him back for more than $1M per season. Season Rating D+. Playoff Rating D-.

Shane O’Brien – SOB was one tough um SOB. But his minor league penalties were in abundance and cost us early in the season. Without any regular season goals he cant be counted on for any offense and should slot in well in the 5th and 6th spot playing a tougher role with some more grit in front of the net. Season Rating C+. Darcy Hordichuk – Darcy can fight. Darcy can cause crap in all areas and he can hit.. Unfortunately he cant do anything else. A very one dimensional player that plays his role well. Roberto Luongo – Roberto Luongo had another tremendous regular season with the Canucks. He had a career year in shutouts. Smashed the Canucks shutout record with 9 and is coming into the final year of his contract. He made highlight reel save after save this year and was stellar in the first round of the playoffs for his second playoff stint. Then it all fell apart against Chicago. Eliminated in 6 games the goalie who became our captain who was to be our saviour went right back to square one in his playoff career. He is back to having to prove himself as a big game goalie and a playoff performer. Should the Canucks not get the Sedins signed and some important pieces of the puzzle we may lose Luongo to free agency next summer. Season Rating A+. Playoff Rating C-.

Coaching – Should have been nominated for coach of the year when you lose your goalie for 2 months its an amazing thing to keep them in the hunt for a playoff spot let alone win a Division Title. not sure if he is the one to lead us to the next level but we could be worse off with alot of the younger player coaches coming in to the NHL. The Season ended when it shouldnt have. The Season was another dissapointment in a series of dissapintments in this franchises sorry History. Anything less than a Conference final appearance is a failure and needs action each time. Its coming on 40 years of losing and its time to stop celebrating 1994… 1994 was loss and that is what should be remembered. We need new history we need winning.

NHL Player Needs before Sedins decide

- 3 Top 6 Forwards (1 if the Sedins decide to sign with the Canucks)

- 2 Top 4 defesemen (at least one puck moving dman and PP specialist)

- 1 Backup Goalie (Schneider is the man)

Draft Needs

- Potential  Top 6 Defenseman

- Diamond in the rough (a forward of Zetterberg material in his level of drafting)

What is your Plan?

NA NA NA NA… NA NA NA NA… HEY HEY HEY… GOODBYE. BLUES SWEPT 4 STRAIGHT!!!!

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Vancouver has done something for the first time in Franchise history. The Swept a 7 Game series. The Canucks have Swept the St Louis Blues 4 straight Tuesday night.

Alex Burrows scored his second goal of the game 19:41 into overtime and Roberto Luongo made 47 saves to help the Vancouver Canucks complete a four-game, first-round sweep of St. Louis with a 3-2 victory over the Blues on Tuesday night. Luongo was Magic again as he stopped 18 shots in the Extra Frame to give Burrows the Chance to win it with 19 seconds left.

What is disturbing is the amount of minor penalties the Canucks are taking in this last series and while the PK has been HUGE and we cant keep it up against teams like Chicago, Calgary, Detroit, Anaheim or San Jose.

The team gets some much needed rest as the they now await their next opponent which may not be known until next week. Sundin, Salo, Mitchell and Luongo will all use this as good rest time to nurse their wounds and be ready to go to War again.

Canucks Republic 3 Stars.

1. Roberto Luongo made 47 saves. Including 18 in the Overtime

2. Alex Burrows ~ 2 Goal night including the series clincher with 19 seconds left in OT

3. NHL Review. For not giving the Blues that goal that crossed the line (although the rule is that the goalie cant be pushed into the net which Roberto was its still nice to get a lucky break…..) But since they really cant have one we will give it to Andy McDonald again as he was the Blues best player the whole series.

Quotable ~ “These guys play well, they were one of the hottest teams down the stretch and they play hard and have a great system,” said Luongo. “So it was not something that we thought but we worked hard and we got it.”

“We have a few guys banged up. It’s good that we’re going to get the rest now and heal up and make sure we’re ready to go when the next round starts.”
