Canucks and Coach leave Rookie Goalie out to Dry.

Sunday, November 30th, 2008

in a game that meant so much in the standings the Vancouver Canucks made a typical Coaching mistake that has been very prominent in all the years back to Marc Crawford. Destroy your back up and play the rookie when its the worst possible moment. I do not agree with starting Corey Schnedier in Calgary on a CBC game. Not because I do not think the rookie didn’t deserve the shot I just think that Sanford didn’t deserve NOT to get the HNIC game. He has played well enough filling in for the biggest pair of skates this team has ever seen (figuratively and literally). Sanford deserved that HNIC game more than any prospect in our system and he was wrongly benched and not by an injury, CBC reported that AV pencilled in Corey on Friday for the important Saturday Tilt. On a day where Minnesota, Colorado, and Edmonton all won Vancouver faced the possibility of losing a 5 point division lead which now stands at 1 point in front of 2 teams. AV and the Canucks bended to the pressure of the Vancouver Media to start the young goaltender (who aside from the 2-0 goal played very cooly and smart).

Who would think that a Game on December 1st would be a must win. Well after losing 2 straight to a Division rival the game in Columbus is a MUST win.

Ready for another disappointment? We will see the reaction Sanford and Sons will have as the Canucks face a team that has beaten them once already this season. We better see a much more determined effort than Saturday night…….

STATS LLC: Having found success with a newly formed line, the Calgary Flames go for a sweep of their home-and-home series with the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday as the Northwest Division rivals meet at the Pengrowth Saddledome.

Flames coach Mike Keenan juggled his top line before Thursday’s game at Vancouver, putting captain Jarome Iginla with Michael Cammalleri and Matthew Lombardi. The dividends were immediate, as Cammalleri posted his first career hat trick — scoring two goals on one-timers off feeds from Iginla — in a 4-3 win.

“The best feeling about this is the win,” said Cammalleri, who has seven goals and 16 points in 17 lifetime games against the Canucks. “Maybe we didn’t say it out loud, but we were all thinking we need to win these two games to get back to where we want to be and you can’t win them both if you don’t win the first one.”

The hope is Iginla will be able to revitalize Cammalleri, who had scored just two goals in his previous 11 games. While Iginla did extend his point streak to five games, it may also serve as a jump-start for the captain against the Canucks (14-7-2), who held him without a point in sweeping a home-and-home series at the start of the season.

“He can get (his shot) off quick,” said Iginla about Cammalleri. “(Coach) shifted the lines and as a group all our lines are looking better and developing chemistry.”

Curtis Glencross snapped a 3-all tie with 6:31 left for the Flames (13-9-1), who have won four of their last five and are trying to win three straight for the first time since a six-game run from Oct. 21-Nov. 1.

The Canucks had their lead atop the Northwest reduced to three points as they failed to get at least one point for the first time in 11 games (8-1-2). Vancouver, which has gone 5-0-1 in its last six away from home and starts a seven-game road swing with this contest, feels it can bounce back by keeping things simple.

“They picked off a couple of pucks and made us pay tonight,” said Canucks goalie Curtis Sanford, who is expected to make his fourth straight start in place of the injured Roberto Luongo. “And going on the road, we have to shore that up and get back to what we were doing when we were successful out there.”

Daniel Sedin extended his goal-scoring streak to five games, while twin brother Henrik notched his 400th career point — two fewer than Daniel — assisting on it.

Vancouver went 0-for-4 on the power play Thursday, and is 1-for-18 in three games against Calgary this season.

7 Game Road Trip should be treated as a 7 Game Series

Friday, November 28th, 2008

As the Canucks venture out on their second longest road trip of the season, a 7 game trip that sees them visit 4 different time zones in a 2 week span the Canucks need to treat this trip like a 7 game series and win a minimum of 4 games and hopefully pull off a OTL in the meantime. 8 out of 15 points would be moderately successful and help keep them on pace for a playoff spot if not 1st in the Division. The Canucks are showing they can win without their Captain and Franchise but even that excitement and adrenalin will wear off where the Canucks have to rely on Grit, Hardwork and team chemistry. Realistically 5 of these games should be winnable

Sat, Nov 29 @ Calgary 7:00 PM <=
Mon, Dec 1 @ Columbus 4:00 PM <=
Thu, Dec 4 @ Detroit 4:30 PM
Fri, Dec 5 @ Minnesota 5:00 PM
Sun, Dec 7 @ Colorado 5:00 PM <=
Tue, Dec 9 @ Nashville 5:00 PM <=
Sat, Dec 13 @ Edmonton 7:00 PM <=

As the extensive road trips start to be put behind the season 30 games of their remaining 52 games are at home with one last 6 game trip in March which may determine the playoffs.

My Prediction for this road trip

Sat, Nov 29 @ Calgary 7:00 PM (4-2 Loss)
Mon, Dec 1 @ Columbus 4:00 PM (3-1 Win)
Thu, Dec 4 @ Detroit 4:30 PM (3-2 Loss)
Fri, Dec 5 @ Minnesota 5:00 PM (3-2 OTL)
Sun, Dec 7 @ Colorado 5:00 PM (4-3 Win)
Tue, Dec 9 @ Nashville 5:00 PM (2-1 Win)
Sat, Dec 13 @ Edmonton 7:00 PM (4-3 OTL)

Ending the Road Trip with a 3-2-2 Record for 8 points.

Canucks Lose even game by inside post!

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

2 pucks rang off the post for each team. The Canucks had it go off the inside post and out while the Flames had theirs go inside in the net that proved to be the difference in the game where the Flames got their first win of the season against Vancouver and will now have to await the retribution game for the Canucks in Calgary on Saturday (smart money might be on the Flames for this game)

The Sedins got caught on a shift that caused a 3-2 goal and aside from a goal to make it 2-1 never really proved to be the difference makers that Curtis Glencross and Mike Cammalleri was for the Calgary Flames.

4-3 Flames win……….

Stats LLC:

With the Calgary Flames trying to surge toward their Northwest Division lead, the Vancouver Canucks are comforted knowing their backup goalie is playing as well as their injured starter was.

The Canucks try to avoid their first regulation loss in more than three weeks on Thursday night as they open another home-and-home series with a Flames club looking for their fourth win in five games.

Curtis Sanford is a big reason why Vancouver (14-6-2) has stayed hot and remained atop the division, with the Flames (12-9-1) five points behind.

The Canucks have allowed more than two goals only once in their last 10 games, going 8-0-2 since a 3-2 loss to Detroit on Nov. 2. They avenged that defeat Monday behind Sanford, who made 32 saves as Vancouver beat the Red Wings 3-2 in overtime for its fourth win in a row.

It was Sanford’s first start since Roberto Luongo strained his groin in the first period of a 3-1 win over Pittsburgh on Saturday. Sanford became just the third goaltender this season to hold high-scoring Detroit under three goals.

“We’re rallying around each other,” said Sanford, who is 1-3-0 with a 3.32 GAA in his career versus Calgary. “There’s adversity right now and we’re finding a way to deal with it. We have each other’s back out there and we’re going to find a way to get through all this.”

Sanford has played all but 4:54 of the Canucks’ last three games, winning each of them while posting a 1.69 goals-against average. Luongo, who is 11-5-2 with a 2.17 GAA this season, is not expected to return until next week at the earliest.

That means Sanford will be facing a Calgary team coming off one of its best offensive efforts of the season. The Flames beat the Los Angeles Kings 6-2 on Tuesday night when two of their offseason acquisitions contributed a combined three goals and two assists.

Curtis Glencross scored for the second straight game and had two assists for Calgary. He has six assists during the team’s current 4-2-0 stretch.

“I’m starting to feel more comfortable now,” said Glencross, who signed a three-year deal during the offseason after playing for Columbus and Edmonton in 2007-08. “It takes a while to settle in and get to know all the guys.”

Glencross, however, has no points in two meetings with Vancouver this season and the Flames lost both, 6-0 on Oct. 9 and 5-4 in overtime two days later.

Calgary’s Rene Bourque had a goal and an assist in that overtime loss and he’s coming off his fifth career multi-goal game, having scored twice versus the Kings. He is already halfway to his point total from all of 2007-08, when he had 10 goals and 14 assists in 62 games with Chicago.

“Maybe these guys weren’t always on the first line wherever they’ve played before, but they’ve been able to score, put points up and contribute and take the pressure off of Jarome (Iginla),” said Craig Conroy, who had his ninth career three-assist game on Tuesday.

Iginla notched his team-leading 12th goal and team-high 14th assist Tuesday, but is pointless versus Vancouver this season. That home-and-home set marks the only time this season he’s failed to register a point in consecutive games.

Canucks winger Daniel Sedin recorded two goals and three assists in those two games. He enters this matchup having scored a goal in four straight games, also totaling three assists in that span.

Sedin scored the game-tying goal Monday off an assist from Sami Salo, who later scored the game-winner after missing the previous two games with the flu.

Vancouver has won six of its last eight home games against Calgary. These teams will also meet Saturday at the Pengrowth Saddledome.
